Planned Giving

The Family Life Center Planned Giving Program helps to ensure our long-term ability to provide services for victims of Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault in our community, while also providing the opportunity for donors to leave a lasting legacy and continue to help victims for years to come.

All donors who have made, or plan to make, a planned gift will be included in our donor recognition materials.

If the donor wishes to remain anonymous, please contact Tammy Sanner at (386) 437-7747 x403 or via email at tammy@familylifecenterflagler.org.

Qualified Charitable Distributions

A qualified charitable distribution (QCD) allows individuals who are 70½ years old or older to donate up to $100,000 total to one or more charities directly from a taxable IRA instead of taking their required minimum distributions. As a result, donors may avoid being pushed into higher income tax brackets and prevent phaseouts of other tax deductions, though there are some other limitations.

Qualified charitable distributions are made directly to the eligible charity from a traditional IRA, inherited IRA, inactive Simplified Employee Pension (SEP) plan and inactive Savings Incentive Match Plan for Employees (SIMPLE) IRAs. (Inactive SEP and SIMPLE IRAs are accounts that no longer receive employer contributions.)

An individual donor can contribute up to $100,000 per year in QCDs, as long as that individual is 70½ years old or older. For married couples, each spouse can make QCDs up to the $100,000 limit for a potential total of $200,000.

The $100,000 per person limit applies to the sum of all QCDs taken from all IRAs in a year. A donor can make one large contribution or several smaller contributions over the course of the calendar year. Remember that QCDs can be made from any or more than one of the IRA types (traditional, inherited, inactive SEP and inactive SIMPLE IRAs) noted above.

State tax rules on QCDs vary, and other limitations may apply, so donors using charitable distributions should consult their financial and tax advisors for more information and to understand the impact on tax liabilities.

Visit www.irs.gov for more information about charitable contribution deductions.

Charitable Bequests

Choosing the right planned gift depends on your personal circumstances and financial goals, but one of the easiest way to leave a legacy gift is through a charitable bequest. You may make a bequest or gift through your estate by including a provision in your will or living trust, or by naming Family Life Center as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy.

Types of Bequests

  • Specific Bequest: A specific bequest involves making a gift of a specific dollar amount. For example, you may wish to leave a gift of $10,000 to Family Life Center.
  • Percentage Bequest: A bequest can also be made by leaving a specific percentage of your overall estate to charity. For example, you may wish to leave 10% of your estate to Family Life Center.
  • Residual Bequest: A residual bequest is made from the balance of an estate after the will or trust has honored each of the specific bequests. Usually, residual bequests are left as a percentage of the residue of the estate. For example, you may wish to leave 25% of the residue of your estate to Family Life Center.

Benefits of a Bequest

  • Tax Deduction: Bequests are exempt from federal estate taxes. If you have a taxable estate, the estate tax charitable deduction may offset or eliminate estate taxes, resulting in a larger inheritance for your heirs.
  • Flexibility: A bequest is generally a revocable gift, so it can be changed or modified at any time.
  • Donor Designation: You can choose to designate that a bequest be used for a specific purpose, giving you peace of mind knowing that your gift will be used as you intended.

Bequest Language

Your attorney can help you include a bequest in your estate plan. Below we have provided some basic bequest language to assist you and your attorney.

  • Bequest of a Specific Dollar Amount:
    • I hereby give, devise and bequeath _________ and No/100 dollars ($DOLLARS) to Flagler Ecumenical Social Service Center, Inc. dba Family Life Center, a nonprofit organization located at P.O. Box 2058, Bunnell, FL  32110,Federal Tax ID #59-2832976, for Family Life Center's general use and purpose.
  • Percentage Bequest:
    • I hereby give, devise and bequeath ____ percent (___%) of my total estate, determined as of the date of my death, to Flagler Ecumenical Social Service Center, Inc. dba Family Life Center, a nonprofit organization located at P.O. Box 2058, Bunnell, FL  32110,Federal Tax ID #59-2832976, for Family Life Center's general use and purpose.
  • Residual Bequest:

  • Restricted Bequests:
    • If you are considering a bequest to be used for a specific purpose, please let us know. We will be happy to work with you and your attorney to help identify ways to give that will meet your charitable objectives.
    • If you are making a restricted bequest, we recommend that you include a provision to give Family Life Center flexibility should it no longer be possible for us to use your gift as you originally intended. An example of such a provision may be:
      • If, in the judgment of the Board of Directors of Family Life Center, it shall become impossible for Family Life Center to use this bequest to accomplish the specific purposes of this bequest, Family Life Center may use the income and principal of this gift for such purpose or purposes as the Board determines is most closely related to the restricted purpose of the bequest.
