With 69% of Americans having at least one pet in their home, and 88% of pet owners considering their pets to be part of their families, it's clear that pets are important to us. They provide unconditional love, joy, and comfort, and provide health benefits including decreased cortisol levels and lower blood pressure.
"Research shows abusers often have a pattern of violence towards all members of the household – including children and pets. When domestic violence survivors seek to flee their abusers, many are faced with the challenge of finding shelter for themselves, their children, and their pets. Many shelters do not have the means to house companion animals. Sadly, many survivors stay in abusive homes for fear of subjecting their animals to continued abuse if they’re left behind, or worse yet, torture or death." - RedRover.org
With the opening of our Kennels and Kottage Program, Family Life Center is addressing this challenge in Flagler County. Survivors residing in our Emergency Shelter can now house their pets, including dogs, cats and other small animals, such as pocket pets and fish, at Family Life Center's Emergency Shelter facilities. Pet accommodations at Family Life Center include a four bay dog kennel and a pet "kottage" for cats, small dogs and pocket pets. Family Life Center has partnered with Flagler Humane Society to foster animals we cannot accommodate such as exotic animals and pets with protective behaviors.
